Discussion: Where Olive Trees Weep (2024)

Discussion Night

This week’s film discussion: Where Olive Trees Weep

Where Olive Trees Weep offers a searing window into the struggles and resilience of the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation. It explores themes of loss, trauma, and the quest for justice.

Lent is a season of slowing down, paying attention, and making space for reflection – but it’s also a season we walk through together. In our Movies for Lent series, we gather on select Mondays to watch a movie as a community and enjoy a shared story on the big screen.

This week, we’ll meet again for a casual discussion about last week’s film. These nights are less about having the “right” answers and more about sharing reactions, ideas, and questions that came up along the way.

Whether the movie made you laugh, think, or just kept you entertained, your perspective matters. We’ll use a few guiding questions to help the conversation flow and see how the story connects–sometimes loosely, sometimes surprisingly–to faith, life, and the season of Lent.

We’ll gather in the Library at Village Grace to discuss together.

HOMEpdx Meal – Every 3rd Sunday

On the third Sunday of each month, we join Pastor Bruce Arnold and HOMEpdx to share a hot meal with our houseless neighbors downtown.

  • 11:30–11:45am – After service, we’ll gather in the Village Grace kitchen to pack lunches and load them into cars.

  • ~12:30pm – We head downtown to serve the meal and spend time with friends who live both inside and outside.

We need helping hands in two ways:

  • Contribute food items for the lunch.

  • Serve by packing, delivering, and sharing the meal.

You’re welcome to do one or both—every part matters.

In Matthew 25, Jesus teaches us that by serving others, we serve Him. We believe this is what brings change.

Other ways to get involved

Cell phones needed!

Our houseless friends need cell phones in order to keep up with appointments and housing information. If you have an old cell phone or iPad you’re no longer using, please drop it off at the church.

Everyone is welcome to make a joyful noise! This is a low commitment choir, so if you can only sign up for one or two weeks, you are still welcome to join!

Please contact Mark Licitra at marklicitra@gmail.com to sign up. Include your preferred voice (soprano, alto, tenor, bass) if you know it and what weeks you may be able to attend during December.

Rehearsals will begin in November.

Loose Parts Collage Workshop

Loose Parts Collage Workshop

Ladies, join us for a creative "Loose Parts Collage Workshop" themed around the harvest season. Inspired by Psalm 34, “Taste and see that the Lord is good,” we will gather to reflect on the many blessings in our lives and express gratitude through art.

Using an array of natural and found materials, you’ll create a unique collage that celebrates the abundance of this season.

As we work, we’ll explore questions of spiritual growth: What is flourishing in your life? What spiritual foods are sustaining you?

This hands-on workshop is a space to connect, create, and bring in a personal harvest of gratitude.

Taste and see that the Lord is good;
blessed is the one who takes refuge in him.
— Psalm 23

All materials will be provided, and no artistic experience is necessary—just bring an open heart and a spirit of thankfulness!

Cost is $45 (price includes lunch)

Autumn Groups: Common Ground

Autumn Groups: Common Ground

In a world that feels bent on division and destruction, we long to lean into the ways Christ calls us to wholeness.

The common ground series is a 6 week series designed to lay the foundation for the future trajectory of this church community. Our stated mission is to be a community committed to shalom (wholeness) as a response to Christ’s love and sacrifice. In a world that feels bent on division and destruction, we long to lean into the ways Christ calls us to wholeness.
Our “common ground” is the rich soil of God’s unconditional love received through the person of Jesus, who is in pursuit of us all. The major points of discussion for this series will revolve around what it means to have Jesus at the center of our faith, community at the center of our lives, and restoration at the center of our work. We hope you will join us.

Available Groups:

Hillsdale Group: Thursdays 7-8:30 pm (Hosted by Shayna Tucker)

Lake Oswego Group: Wednesdays 7-8:30 pm (Hosted by Julie Dawson)

Marshall Park Group: Wednesdays 7:30-9 pm (Hosted by Malin and Sara Friess)

Multnomah Village Group: Sunday afternoon/evenings (Hosted by Preston and Stephanie Byrd)
